Massey University Science Building
Project Type
Education Facility
Role
BIM Manager
Date
June 2019 to May 2021
Location
Auckland
As BIM Manager for the main contractor, I led the full digital delivery of this 9,500 m² science and research facility from early design through to construction. I developed and implemented the BIM Execution Plan, led multidisciplinary coordination and clash detection, and aligned model delivery with the construction schedule and procurement priorities. Through proactive coordination and site verification, I significantly reduced rework and enabled high quality, fully coordinated pre-construction models, contributing to the successful delivery of this award-winning university facility.

Site progress capture & aerial overview using DroneDeploy
Captured regular site progress using DroneDeploy to create accurate aerial overviews of construction activity across different project stages. The drone imagery was used to visually track build progress, compare construction milestones over time, and support site coordination, reporting, and stakeholder communication. This approach provided a clear, real-time understanding of site conditions while improving transparency and decision making throughout the project lifecycle.

Massey University Construction (Time-Lapse & H&S Review)
This video showcases the ongoing development of the Massey Innovation Complex, captured using DroneDeploy’s aerial and ground level imagery over multiple dates. By using DroneDeploy’s side by side comparison tools and time-series mapping, the footage highlights structural progress, changes in site layout, earthworks, and building phases, alongside a visual review of health and safety conditions on-site. The result is a comprehensive build diary that documents construction evolution, monitors compliance, and supports transparent project management from start to finish.

Massey Uni - 4D BIM Construction Sequencing & Programme Visualisation
Developed a 4D BIM simulation integrating the construction programme with the federated BIM model to visualise build sequencing over time for the Massey University Innovation Complex. The 4D model was used to communicate construction methodology, validate staging and logistics planning, and support coordination between site teams and consultants. This visual planning tool improved programme understanding, highlighted potential sequencing risks early, and supported more informed decision-making during construction delivery.

Point cloud scan overlay with Structural Steel Model for As-Built Verification
Overlaid high resolution point cloud scan data with the structural steel BIM model to validate as-built installation against design intent. This comparison enabled precise verification of steel member positioning, elevations, and tolerances, allowing early identification of installation variances and potential clashes with other trades. The aligned model supported quality assurance, improved coordination accuracy, and provided a reliable digital record for construction validation and future reference.

Clash Detection & Safety in Design Review for Maintenance Access
Conducted coordinated clash detection reviews with a strong focus on Safety in Design, particularly ensuring safe and compliant access for ongoing maintenance. Using federated BIM models, potential clashes and access constraints around plant rooms, cable trays, ducts, and equipment were identified early. Maintenance clearances, service access zones, and safe working spaces were reviewed and validated in 3D, enabling designers and engineers to resolve safety risks before construction. This process improved long-term asset operability, reduced safety hazards, and supported safer, more maintainable design outcomes.

Pre-Fabrication Steel Penetration Identification & Rapid Coordination Review
Led a fast-paced pre-fabrication review of steel penetrations one week before fabrication commenced, coordinating closely with the structural engineer and steel subcontractor. Through intensive model review and real-time coordination, several critical penetration clashes and constructability issues were identified and resolved prior to fabrication. This early intervention prevented costly rework, avoided programme delays, and significantly accelerated the construction process, delivering major time and cost savings to the project.

2D Drawing Overlay with 3D BIM Model in Revizto for Design Verification
Overlaid 2D construction drawings onto the coordinated 3D BIM model within Revizto to verify design intent against the live federated model. This process enabled rapid cross-checking of plans, sections, and details against the 3D geometry, improving issue identification, reducing documentation discrepancies, and enhancing communication between consultants and site teams. The workflow supported more accurate coordination and faster resolution of design queries.

Navisworks Clash Detection & Revizto Integration for Engineering Visualisation
Led clash detection reviews in Autodesk Navisworks, identifying and managing coordination issues between structural, architectural, and MEP models. Used Navisworks to run clash tests, group and prioritise issues, and then pushed selected clashes and viewpoints to Revizto via API integration. This workflow enabled engineers and designers to review clashes in an intuitive 3D environment, improving visibility of issues, supporting faster decision-making, and helping reduce rework on site through clearer communication of design conflicts.

Federated BIM Model Review in Revizto
Undertook coordinated federated model reviews in Revizto for the Massey University project, bringing together architectural, structural, and MEP models into a single collaborative environment. The federated model was used to visually review design coordination, track issues, and facilitate real time collaboration between engineers, consultants, and site teams. This workflow improved interdisciplinary coordination, accelerated issue resolution, and supported more informed design and construction decision making across the project.
